THE LINCOLN SCHOOLBOOK FAIR

Our 10th Annual and final Book Fair at Lincoln School was held Tuesday, May 5, 2009.  Over 250 books were distributed to students in kindergarten through 5th grade with their names inscribed on a New Covenant Community Church book plate. Teachers and students were extremely appreciative. Volunteers who helped give out the books were: Ruth and Lev Anderson, Judy Cory, Andy and Michael Clayton, Joanne Mazzaferro, Bob Myers, Phil Smith, Susie Stevenor, Dick and Eve Wagner, Charlene and Tom Witner, and Betsy Davis. The book plates, designed and printed by Sandi Cole, read, "In Honor of Lincoln School 1910-2009."

Lincoln Elementary has been housing children since it was first opened in 1910. Our Bob Myers attended elementary school there in the 1920's, Joanne Mazzaferro taught Lincoln first graders in the 1950's, and Tim Meyer took swimming lessons in Lincoln's pool in the 1960's. We are grateful to everyone who has been involved with this literary mission to children over the past ten years. We have been as enriched as the children we have served.

 MOTHER'S DAY DINNER

 AT THE BATTERED WOMEN'S SHELTERS

On Friday afternoon, May 7, 2010, members of our congregation gathered in the church kitchen to prepare a  feast for the women and children currently living in the shelters available for battered women in Akron. Later in the afternoon, Shelter volunteers arrived to pick up the twenty floral arrangements, hand-made Mother's Day cards, and the meal.

This was the second annual Mother's Day meal presented by New Covenant Community Church.

 CROP WALK

Thank you for supporting Covenant Youth, Hanna, Leslie, and Margaret, and Michelle and Jan and their participation in the annual CROP Walk. We walked and you contributed a total of $350! One half of that contribution will be used in support of the Akron-Canton Regional Food Bank.

WALK AGAINST HUNGER

Again the youth of New Covenant thank the congregation for its overwhelming support of their participation in the Walk Against Hunger sponsored this year by the Akron Area Interfaith Council.

Held on Sunday, May 2, Leslie, Margaret, James, Jan, Ellen, Callie, Drake, Nancy, Ken, Jackie, Robert, and best dog-friend Lilly met at 3:00 at the Unitarian Universalist Church in order to participate.  NCCC raised over $325 all of which was donated to the Akron-Canton Food Bank.

 INTERFAITH HOSPITALITY NETWORK

Members of New Covenant Community Church will continue to work with Fairlawn West United Church of Christ, St. Paul's Episcopal Church, the Unitarian Universalist Church of Akron  and the Akron Interfaith Hospitality Network to provide room and board for families who are currently without housing.

Opportunities to provide a meal or a portion of a meal, to be an evening host, or be an over-night host are available. If you would like to become involved in this project, please call Jan at the church office, 330-253-6989.  Our rotation occurs every nine weeks.

  GENNESARET SOUP KITCHEN

What are you doing every second Saturday morning from 9:00 until 1:00 pm?  Why not come spend one morning a month with members of our congregation as we join other persons of faith in service to Akronites who have far less than we.

What do we do there?  We bag donated foods to be distributed to our guests, we set tables, we make drinks, we serve food, and we clean up.  We make new friends, we share the love of God, we exchange kinds words, we try to bring a little relief into the lives of our brothers and sisters.

Why don't you come join us.  If you would like more information, please call Jan at the church office, 330-253-6989.

 COVENANT YOUTH WORK WEEK

Covenant Youth participated in The National Council of Churches Ecumenical Work Week III: Worship, Witness & Work, August 2-8, 2009, in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Photographs of our trip are displayed in the photo gallery of this website.

  RED WAGON MISSION

Healthy snack foods can be brought to the church to be donated to One Family Under Guard.  That congregation has a neighborhood mission in which during the summer months they fill red wagons with books and educational materials.  They then set up shop on the sidewalk and invited children to come and read, play, learn, and have safe fun.  Any snacks we provide will be distributed to the children OFUG serves.  We support this mission every summer.

HARVEST HOME CELEBRATION

Donations of non-perishable foods can be brought to the church throughout the months of November and December.

All donations are given to Gennesaret to help supplement their clients' grocery needs and they are given to One Family Under Guard to be distributed to families in their neighborhood who have the need.

SALVATION ARMY

We support the Salvation Army during the holidays by volunteering to "ring bells" from 9:00 am - 9:00 pm at the Acme 1 and thereby collect monetary donations in support of the Salvation Army and its work.

CHRISTMAS BASKETS

Between Thanksgiving and Christmas, we purchase, pack, and deliver boxes of food to approximately sixty-five families in the Akron area.  We work with Acme in Montrose who sells us the food at cost; we pack the boxes with foods needed to prepare a turkey dinner for five.

 THE AIRFARE ASSISTANCE FUND

New Covenant Community Church organized and main-ains the Airfare Assistance Fund which underwrites the flight expenses of military personnel of the Summit County area who have military leave either immediately before or after their deployment to a war zone.  It is the Fund's purpose to assist those who could not otherwise afford the expense of this flight.

Funded 100% through donations, one may contribute simply by forwarding one's gift to New Covenant Community Church, 2095 West Market Street, Akron, Ohio 44313.  Please note on the check that the gift is to be used for the Airfare Assistance Fund.

  COMMUNITY CLEAN-UP DAY AT

ONE FAMILY UNDER GUARD

New Covenant Community Church supports her sister church, One Family Under Guard, in as many ways as possible.  One of those is the annual "clean-up" day in June.  We will gather around 9:00 am and work side-by-side with our friends beautifying their church grounds and surrounding properties.

REDEMPTIVE WAY

One Family Under Guard Ministries provides an outreach program to inmates in the City of Akron's jails.  We support their ministry by donating new, white socks for men and women, and for providing Bibles to be given to the inmates.  utifying their church grounds and surrounding properties.  This is a new ministry and will hopefully be on-going.

CAMO

Central American Medical Outreach

CAMO is a humanitarian organization that improves the lives of people by strengthening health care systems and pro-moting sustainable community development.

“We provide care for more than 143,000 medical needs with an average of approximately $2 million in donated medical supplies, equipment and expertise each year. We distribute supplies and equipment, offer 16 health programs, and renovate public health and community buildings. We multiply every $1 donated into $4. The quality

and commitment of our volunteers and services is recognized as the best available--at a lower cost than other organizations."

Moved by the suffering she observed as an RN and Peace Corps volunteer in Honduras, our Founder and CEO Kathryn Tschiegg, resolved to do what she could to change the situation. Kathy returned to Honduras with a team of physicians and technicians from the United States in early

1992 and began CAMO in May of 1993.”   www.camo.org
